Hummus From Scratch Homemade & Fluffy, Not Expensive & Dense

Bargain Hummus

Posted on Mar 2, 2018

You can find my original hummus recipe in this post but it was the array of hummus permutations at the grocery yesterday that prompted me to make a video of the process. How many times can I say it? Cook. Beans. From. Dry.

The selection yesterday had a range of prices (and flavours which you can just as easily do yourself) but the cheapest of the lot was 300g for $5.99. Granted I see those tubs of dense, industrial stodge go on markdown often but even at half price, it’s still ridiculous. Homemade as I do here with dry beans made a batch three times that size for a sum total of $0.42. Forty two cents a batch! (no, I wasn’t channelling Douglas Adams with my I-ching calculator when I did those sums). Do the extended math and that means the store is hovering around a 2000% markup even at discount sale prices. Even if that’s not enough motivation for you to soak a few beans, the flavour and texture differences between fresh and store-bought should convince you. Make a batch already.
